Environmental compliance approach

All facilities, a special waste management following system is implemented, that has been Created by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization in 2004 Waste Management Centre Unit, operates within the association and carries out the activities of asbestos removal, inventory, collection and removal of the wastes existing on board, their temporary storage and reporting operations.

Turkish ship recycling facilities form an association with the name of “Ship Recyclers Association”. All ship recycling facilities are a member of this association.

The structure of the association is unique, the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, the Ministry of Labour and Social Security and the Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications have authorised Ship Recyclers Association as the only body that is allowed to clean ships, remove hazardous materials and manage hazardous wastes.

The association is allowed to inspect the ships, prepare an inventory of hazarodus materials, asbestos removal, temporary storage of hazardous wastes in temporary waste station, transfer these waste to approprate disposal/recycle facility, inform to relevant authoroties and keep the hazardous waste transportation forms.

All of hazardous wastes are managed by the Ship Recyclers Assocaiton Waste Managemant Center. Turkish Hazardous Waste Controll Regulation is in paralel with the EU regulations and all the operations are in compliance with nation legistation & International guidelines.

Ship Recyclers Association Waste Managemant Center competent personnels carry out an inspection on vessel to identify the quantity & the location of the wastes. As the importation of the vessel procedure is completed, Ship Recyclers Association hazardous waste removal teams remove / collect hazardous wastes and transfer these wastes to temporary waste station. These hazardous wastes are;

  • Asbestos
  • Medicine
  • Scrap accumulator
  • Pile
  • Cable
  • PCB’s
  • Freon Gas ( R12 – 22)
  • Contaminated materials ( with oil – paint)
  • Contaminated materils with chemical ( Engine additive – Paint rust stabiliser – ect)
  • Paint residue
  • Electronic waste
  • Contaminated land
  • Liquid waste ( oil- fuel – bunker – sludge – bilge & other)

The solid hazardous wastes are collected and transfered to the temporary waste station immediately. The facility also has a temporary hazardous waste storage area where the solid and liquid wastes can be stored ( a licence criteria)
